Europäische Stadtansichten des 19. Jahrhunderts
Das 19. Jahrhundert brachte mit dem Dampfschiff (ab 1820) und der Eisenbahn (ab 1830) zwei wichtige Fortbewegungsmittel, die das Reisen erleichterten. Deswegen wuchs die Zahl der Städteansichten, vor allem ab 1840, enorm an. Sie fanden Eingang in Zeitschriften und Bücher, und viele neue Verlage lebten vom steigenden Interesse der Menschen an fremden Gegenden.
Der langsam wachsende Wohlstand des Bürgertums machte Reisen möglich, und Bildungsreisen gehörten bald zum Selbstverständnis des gehobenen Bürgertums.
Die Stadtansichten geben nicht nur das Stadtbild der Zeit prägnant wieder. In vielen kleinen Szenen im Vordergrund erfahren wir auch viel über die Arbeit und die Freizeit der Menschen im 19. Jahrhundert.

European City Panoramas of the 19th Century
The 19th century brought two new ways of traveling: the steam ships (from 1820) and the railways (from 1835). Therefore, the number of publications with town views increased enormously. They became normal in newspapers and books, and a lot of new publishing houses could be founded in view of the growing interest of people for traveling.
The slowly growing prosperity of the burgeoisie allowed journeys, and educational trips rapidly became part of bourgeois ideals.
The city views do not only show the townscape of the time concisely. In many small scenes in the foreground, we learn also a lot about the labor and the leisure of the people in the 19th century.
